“THE WAY YOU THINK, THE WAY YOU FEEL”.

“TO ADOPT NEW HABITS, CHANGE IS REQUIRED AND TO ACCEPT CHANGE WITH OPEN ARMS, MINDSET IS REQUIRED.”

Mindset meaning in simple terms is “a way of thinking”. Mindset is the assortment of thoughts and beliefs that influence our actions and habits. Our mindset plays a crucial role in how we deal with life’s challenges. Most of the time we are aware of our mindset pattern, but we ignore and do not want to accept and work on it.

It can be split into a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset. Unless we realize the kind of mindset we have, we would never know what kind of change must be incorporated for our betterment. A fixed mindset is the most common and unpleasant one to have. Having a fixed mindset tends to make you not accept other people’s thought processes and opinions. It always makes one believe that he or she is right. This is not a healthy mindset. We all learn with time to move from a fixed mindset toward a growth mindset.

Today, let us begin with determining our mindset and to assess this, we must identify some of the patterns of a fixed mindset.

According to ‘Rene Descartes’ philosophy — “I think, therefore I am.” A statement such as this one is self-affirming.

· Do we always struggle with our thoughts?

· Are we flexible in taking other person’s suggestions/feedback? Or take offence or consider it as a personal attack?

· Do we say often that I cannot learn, it is too late for me to explore?

· I have lived my life, there is no need for me to change in my old age.

· Do we always struggle with thinking new, something innovative, out of the box? And say no, I cannot explore; I do not have that kind of calibre or any other excuse? Then this is again the sign of a fixed mindset.

· Do we use this statement “That’s just who I am, I cannot change it?” Do any of you think this way? Then please analyze it — it is the sign of a fixed mindset.

· Check whether you are comfortable trying out new things? Or stuck with your same ideology.

· Are we flexible in discussing any topic with our children? Or are we always ready to pounce at them, this may be based on some past experiences with them. Then again it is the kind of fixed mindset.

· Do we feel intimidated by other people’s success?

· Do we have a My way or Highway kind of attitude?

These are some of the patterns which I have figured have a fixed mindset. You must analyze and write it in your journal, in which category you belong and how do you want to convert it into a Growth mindset.

What were the different experiences or situations you have had, which had a negative outcome due to this mindset?

If we believe that we always struggle with something, we permanently close a part of our brain that could potentially help us understand it better.

The first step is to analyze the pattern and your way of thinking, and then your journey of positive change begins. What are the activities or patterns you should adopt to come out of this fixed mindset and make it more flexible for your own happiness and your inner growth?

Be honest with yourself. Acknowledge your weaknesses and view challenges as a springboard of opportunities.

• Accept the positive side of criticism to improve yourself and offer constructive criticism whenever possible.

• Cultivate a sense of purpose and never give up on your efforts till you reach the goal.

• Learn from the mistakes of others and get inspired by others’ success.

• Don’t allow setbacks to hold you back because the need for improvement does not mean failure.

  • Don’t quit learning and focus on the process instead of the result.
